This may have to do with the fact that mothers are the first and most important teachers of children.

'Abdu'l say a mother who is a Baha'i (and this means chaste, among other things I presume) ...her children will be most likely to become believers at maturity even if the father is not a believer; while if the father is a Baha'i and the mother is not, the children are not very likely to bcome believers.
