Bahai Library Offline

1. Download [version 5.3, 2026-04]

Download files at archive.org/download/bahai-library-offline-files.

Or download torrent file: bahai-library-offline-files_archive.torrent. [BLO content, excluding archives, is 85 GB total]

(BitTorrent can be faster than direct downloads from archive.org, but uncheck the two
folders "archived_web-crawl_websites" and "jonah_winters_archive_to-do_backlog".)

See also database download.

2. Instructions, step-by-step (from READ_ME_5-3.txt)

  1. First download "bahai-library-offline.zip".
  2. Unzip it by double-clicking on it. This folder, plus the PDFs, contains everything you need to browse the Library offline.
  3. Download "pdf.zip," unzip it, and put it in your new folder "bahai-library-offline".

(We separated the PDF folder, and the folders listed in #5 below, only to reduce download times and make unzipping easier. If we'd kept all the documents in one single folder, like on the actual website, it would be a huge file to download and decompress.)

  4. In that folder, look for the file index.html and double-click on it. It should open with your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.).

You can now browse the entire site offline -- excluding audio, video, and a few other large folders which can be downloaded separate. See #5:

  5. These folders you can download and add to the folder "bahai-library-offline" if you need them:
      audio.zip
      inba.zip (Iranian Nat'l Baha'i Archives)
      newspaper_clippings_archive.zip
      presentations.zip (Powerpoints)
      sohrab_diary.zip (see sohrab_diary_letters)
      video.zip
  6. You can rename the "bahai-library-offline" folder and move it anywhere on your computer, or copy it to a USB stick.

The links are relative, meaning as long as you don't move things around within that folder, the local links will all work offline.

[EDIT APRIL 16 2026 -- THIS INITIAL UPLOAD OF 5.3 DOES *NOT* HAVE RELATIVE LINKS; THOSE FILES ARE BEING PROCESSED AND SHOULD BE DONE IN 2 WEEKS.)

  7. These folders are for archival purposes only, you do not need to download them:
      archived_web-crawl_websites - see bahai-library.com/website_archives
      bahai-library-videos - Filip Boicu's interviews
jonah_winters_archive_to-do_backlog - all the items I've not yet added to BLO
  8. See history of changes at bahai-library.com/Version_5

3. About

  1. Torrent is often faster than direct download. If you don't already have a BitTorrent client I recommend uTorrent, Folx, Transmission, or BitTorrent Web — all work on Windows and Mac.
  2. All documents are either public domain; posted with permission of author, editor, or publisher; or can be classified "fair use." If you see content that may infringe on a copyright, email us.
  3. Most of the site is also at archive.org under archive.../bahai-library.com, and a save was made in April 2024 as archive.../bahai-library.org.
  4. If you don't already have a BitTorrent client I recommend Transmission, uTorrent, or BitTorrent Web — all work on Windows and Mac — or Folx for Mac.

4. Some possible uses

  1. Anyone with "valuable" or unique content they don't want lost (e.g. historical photos, scans of manuscripts, autobiographies) can send it to me for inclusion in the torrent.

  2. In the late 1990s, people made CD-ROM copies of the bahai-library.com filesystem to share with friends in countries with limited internet access. This stopped being possible when the collection became too large for any CD or DVD, and when the content was migrated to a database. Now, the database or parts of the entire collection (e.g., just the PDFs or just the audio) can be shared on a flash drive or USB stick or converted into a spreadsheet.

  3. The data is not tied to a single owner on a single server, and hence can be preserved. This is important because websites can simply disappear overnight: some can fail accidentally, like from a failed hard drive, or they can disappear due to circumstances beyond the owner's control.
