Mr. David Takagi has been a pioneer to various countries in South America since 1970. He has recentley returned to Washington state and spoke about the Chile Temeple at the recent ABS Conference in Seattle at the beginning of September.
David indicated there are no plans drawn up currently, and an architect is being sought currently. He indicated the Temple site was bought in an area on the outskirts of Santiago many years ago in what was then a rural area that was inexpensive at that time. As with many temple sites, these were bought as part of the 10 Year Crusade and are often listed as goals acheived in that time period in Baha'i World, volume 13. These sites are often listed as "endowment" properties.
Since then, the neighborhood of the Chile site has been surrounded by the growth of the city with a great number of expensive dwellings around the vacant property (the national center is located elsewhere). This, he said, is why the local government was wanting to impose a heavy tax upon the property last year, since it's religious uses were in question. However, David said that when the Universal House of Justice asked the NSA of Chile to initiate a Temple building plan with local governmental departments, this taxation effort was stopped.
