Another successful year of events and talk of future

A YEAR of successful events organised by Maidenhead’s multi-faith community was celebrated at a meeting of faith leaders on Thursday last week.
Maidenhead MP Theresa May and the mayor of the Royal Borough, Cllr Mike Bruton, also attended the AGM of Maidenhead Community Consultative Council, which was held at the Rutland Road Sikh Temple.
The MCCC was set up in 1986 as a meeting point for members of all faith communities, including Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Bahai and Brahma, to promote inter-racial community projects, and develop better understanding and respect of all faiths.
Over the last year, MCCC has met several times to discuss the impact of the Iraq War on racial harmony in the town. An exhibition was organised on Islam at Maidenhead Mosque in April and a Buddhist exhibition was held at Maidenhead Library in May.
Sikh Youth took part in Maidenhead Carnival on June 14 with drummers and dancers entertaining the crowd. Next year the MCCC is planning to have its own float.
Karnail Pannu, leader of Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha Sikh Temple and chairman of the MCCC, said: “It was a very good meeting.
“We are becoming more proactive and members are keen to celebrate diversity and peace. The Royal Borough and its residents are enjoying the dividend of good racial harmony.”
Future events planned include a poetry symposium in September, a multi-cultural gala evening and exhibition in February and a youth sports activity in August next year.
