Multi faith march for peace

Jun 4 2003

By Steve Evans

Christians, Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims will join together in Nuneaton this weekend for the town’s annual Walk of Faith - and the emphasis will be on peace.

Saturday’s event is being organised by Nuneaton’s Baha’i community, who planted a peace tree in the town’s George Eliot Memorial Garden about 30 years ago.

The walk will start from the tree and will take in Nuneaton Mosque, the Sikh Gurdwara, the Hindu Centre and St Nicolas Parish Church before finishing at the tree-lined “peace avenue” in Riversley Park.

John Neal, spokesman for Nuneaton’s Baha’i community, said: “We are ordinary townspeople of Nuneaton, of various faiths, but our commitment is to build some links between the various faith groups that we are fortunate to have in Nuneaton.

“During the walk, we will have opportunities to talk to each other and learn about the world faiths that are represented in our town.

“It is hoped that the experience will allow us to enjoy the diversity of our neighbours in Nuneaton and yet bring to focus our single humanity.

“We all have families and friends who want to live in peace in our own communities and in peace in the world as a whole.”

Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Cllr Ian Lloyd will be among those taking part in the walk, which starts at 10.30 am.

Last year, the event won a Radio 2 award for inter-faith initiative on Don Mclean’s Good Morning Sunday programme.

The walk will be followed, at 6.30pm, by a presentation of awards and recitals for a peace poem and songwriting competition organised by the Baha’i community.

The ceremony will be held at the Museum and Art Gallery in Riversley Park.
