The second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast begins at 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 W. 3rd St. in Duluth. Dr. Ruth Simmons, president of Brown University, is the keynote speaker. The theme is “World Peace: It’s in the Dream.”

The free community breakfast is one of five statewide breakfasts funded by a gift from Twin Cities-based General Mills Community Action. Dr. Simmons is appearing live at the Minneapolis Convention Center between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Her speech will be broadcast to all five breakfasts. In Duluth, the program can also be viewed on WDSE-TV 8.

A local program combining excerpts from the antiwar speeches of Dr. King and his spiritual teachings on peace follows the broadcast. Local participants include representatives from the NAACP, Understanding & Dismantling Racism: An Interfaith Project, students from Central, Denfeld, East and Marshall high schools, Harbor City International, Woodland Hills Academy, Unity School and the Adult Learning Center, and representatives of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, Hindu and Baha’i traditions.

All community members are invited to attend this free breakfast. Organizers are expecting 300 to 350 people to attend. Last year’s breakfast served 276 people.

The breakfast will conclude in time for people to participate in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. march and rally. The march leaves from Washington Center (corner of Lake Avenue and 4th Street) at 11:30 a.m. The rally begins at noon at the DECC.
