Group to celebrate beginning of Baha'i faith
The Baha'is of Athens-Clarke County on Friday will celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of the Bab, which marks the beginning of the Baha'i faith.
Mirza Ali-Muhammad, the Bab, was a young merchant who declared his mission in Shiraz, Persia (now Iran), on May 23, 1844. He declared that he was a prophet of God who would establish a new religion after Islam. He took the name "The Bab," which means "the Gate" in Arabic.
He told his followers (who were known as Babis) that his mission was to prepare the world for the appearance of another prophet who would fulfill the promises of all previous religions and usher in an age of unity and peace. A Babi leader by the name of Baha'u'llah, Arabic for "the Glory of God," later announced he was the one foretold by the Bab. Baha'u'llah's followers are known as Baha'is.
