Bahai beads?

Postby SpiritualSeeker » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:39 pm

Where can I find bahai counting beads?
Live your daily life in a way that you never lose yourself. When you are carried away with your worries, fears, cravings, anger, and desire, you run away from yourself and you lose yourself. The practice is always to go back to oneself.Thich Nhat Hanh

You can either make them yourself (95 beads in total - 5 groups of 19)
You can buy them at a bahai centre
Usually they sell them at bahai conferences in the bookshops
If there are any bahai holy sites over there (e.g. the temple in chicago) they might sell some there

I personally dont use them. This is what I do instead to keep count:
(Say this in your head)

Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha
(Think: "ONE")
Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha
(Think: "TWO")
Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha
(Think: "THREE")
Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha - Allahuabha
.
.
.
.
(do all the way until nineteen)

Friends; There is a ready-made, highly-evolved, finger counting and mathematics system
out of Korea which can be used instead of beads to count prayers. Of course, it is also
perfect for many other mathematical purposes. Why not learn it while saying Allah'u'Abha
95 times each day? -Peter

"Chisanbop is an abacus-like finger counting method used to perform basic mathematical
operations. With this method it is possible to display all numbers from 0 to 99 with both hands."

The hands are held in a relaxed posture on or above a table. All fingers are floating off
the table to begin with. The fingers are pressed into the table to indicate value."

Each finger (but not the thumb) of the right hand has a value of one. Press the index finger
of the right hand onto the table to indicate "one." Press the index and long fingers for two,
the three leftmost fingers for three, and all four fingers of the right hand to indicate four."

The thumb of the right hand holds the value five, like the top bead of a soroban or abacus.
To place the value 6, press the right thumb and index finger onto the table. The thumb
indicates 5 plus the 1 indicated by the finger."

The left hand represents the tens digit. It works like the right hand, but each value is
multiplied by ten. Each finger on the left hand represents ten, and the left thumb
represents fifty. In this way, all values between 0 and 99 can be indicated on two hands."

You can find video demonstrations or lessons on www.youtube.com by searching
'Finger Math'. I like this one by a boy named Evan. It is a demonstration rather than
a tutorial, but fun to watch:

This one is a basic Finger Math tutorial:

It is good to make a distinct thump on the table as the fingers register each number.
This adds a tactile impression to the visual and audio impressions which the brain is
experiencing. That is why it works so well. Three senses registering each number
as you do math. -Peter

i like prayer beads.

Baha'u'llah had prayer beads.

There are funny stories of believers and prayer beads.

It is a little bit of a challenge for me ...

I was not raised with prayer beads ...

so my motion is not natural flowing ...
but still *smile* beautiful

hmmm ... faith the size of a mustered seed

I like beads too.

The reason I chose to learn Chisanbop (Korean Finger-Math) is that it can be done
while driving a car, without removing the hands from the wheel. Also, in addition to
being a good way to count prayers, it does double duty by making it easy to add and subtract.
